Montreals public health agency opposes the casino move to Point St. Charles. La Presse reports that the health-agency published a report saying that casino plan would cause severe social effects. According to the report, the casino relocation would result in more problem gamblers. Montreals health agency is requesting the Liberal government to have widespread conferences before giving a final approve to the move.
Loto-Quebec announced last summer its intentions to build a 1.2 billion dollars casino and entertainment complex on CN Railway land. Several community organizations protested against the move claiming it will increase neediness in the area by tempting the poor neighborhood residents to spend their welfare money on casino gambling.
Premier Jean Charest said he is waiting for the review on the casino location written by Guy Coulombe, a former president of Hydro-Quebec. Quebecs Public Security Department published another report this month. Their report claims that moving the casino to its new location might increase gambling related crimes such as theft, fraud and loan sharking in the area.
