What is Draw Poker?
Draw poker often is the first poker game people learn. The game is rarely played at a professional level, but is very popular in home games. The main principle of draw poker is dealing all cards face-down, after which every player can discard a number of his cards and receive the same number of new cards face-down from the deck.
5-Card Draw:
The most popular draw poker variation is Five Card draw poker. In this game each player receives five face-down cards and is allowed to exchange some of them. The maximum number of exchanged cards is determined by the dealer. Normally, players can exchange all their cards if they like, but in some cases, particularly when there are more than six players in the game, it is necessary to define the maximum number of cards to exchange to make sure there are enough cards in the deck.
Betting Structures:
Betting structure of draw poker can vary from table to table. However, most five card draw poker games are played with two betting rounds: one after the initial five cards are dealt and the second one after all players make their draws. Sometimes the game is played with only one betting round straight before the showdown, but such structure results to be less exciting, because all players get to draw cards and no surprises are possible.
Playing it Differently?
Draw poker can also be played differently. For example, there can be more than one drawing rounds. In this case, it is even more important to pay attention to the number of cards in the deck. With two drawing rounds, the maximum of two cards can be drawn per round and the maximum of six players can play the game. Such game also has a different betting structure. The dealing and every drawing round are followed by a betting round which makes three betting rounds in total.
Why do Pros Dislike Draw Poker?
One of the reasons why draw poker is not played by professionals is the fact that all cards are kept face-down until the very showdown, which does not allow to apply any effective strategy. The most significant factor to pay attention to, when playing draw poker is the number of cards discarded by other players. Obviously, players draw new cards in order to improve their hand and every discarded card is a card the player is not satisfied with. The drawn cards, of course, can improve the hand, but the probability of this is quite low, and a player who draws four cards is much less likely to have a strong hand than one who draws only one.
